Yes. Here is the latest copy. Alternative ways to heal. The beginnings of a collection. I haven't tried ANY of these. This isn't a list of recommendations from me or from Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. Apologies to those who have seen these messages before. Please contact me if you have contributions or deletions. There is no particular ordering to the collection either. John Carlson carlson@tis.llnl.gov ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - To: SCHIZOPH@UTORONTO.BITNET From: Steve Cooke My daughter suffers from scizophrenia, and it does seem that her symptoms are very much improved if she doesn't eat anything made from wheat, oats, rye, or barley. She says she feels more 'connected', and her voices more or less go right away. She's convinced enough of the benefit to have stayed off those foods for nearly five months now. I think this sort of thing was first brought to notice in a book called 'Not All In The Mind' by Richard Harkness (I think!) about 20 years ago. I think he was a doctor working at Park Prewet Mental Hospital at the time. My daughter's psychiatrist had never heard of it, but this didn't surprise me as I think Richard Harkness got the cold-shoulder from his colleagues. Note: I don't state a proven fact her, it's something that seems to be true on the evidence so far. CANADA. He was one of the originators, along with Linus Pauling, of orthomolecular psychiatry (meaning opitimum molecular, or something like that). Since I have two brothers who are schizophrenic and am myself an M.D. I happen to know quite a bit about this illness, if anyone has questions I would be happy to answer them as best as I can. Dr. Hoffers main treatment involves taking 3 grams of Niacin, 2 grams Vitamin C, 100mg B-Complex, 25mg Zinc daily. In addition, he strongly discourages smoking and eating sugar especially as these tend to deplete free radical oxidizers such as the above vitamins. Regards, Amir ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - From: ROZZ D LIEGHT [ Ed. note -- I clean up the typing and spelling on this a bit. ] Here is another try at alternatives. Chinese medicine has helped me a lot, and there are practitioners here in Alaska and in Whitehorse Canada. It is based on the Five elements theory of accupuncture, accupressure and herbs. The brain is called the Strange organ and is considered to be under the water meridians of the kidney and bladder. Kidneys also involve the emotion fear. The heart meridian is also involved , because it involves joy, including shock, overjoy, and can when unbalanced be involved in hallucination. Please refer to a book called "The Red Dragon" and the better book, considered by chinese pratictioners, is Iona Marsa Teagarden's books "Accupressure Way of Health" and her book "Joy of Feeling." Balance is the goal. I am all for this look at alternatives, We deserve a Second Opinion!!! Yes, I have noticed over a number of years that apparently seasonal onset of schizophrenic episodes, lowering of effectiveness of phenothiazine even (albeit high) dosage has been tied quite closely to the application of CuSO4 as an algicide in the water supply. This is an isolated personal observation over nearly two decades, a portion of which I had on-the-job direct access to WHEN and HOW MUCH CuSO4 was added to the reservoirs. I no longer have that access, but possibly could obtain historical figures from the local water dept. Bruce Gingery ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- - Webster's: Candidiasis -- A fungous infection caused by a member of the genus Candida GERRY MOLONEY mentions a fungus infection of the intenstine causing schizophrenia-like symptoms. This is discussed in "The Missing Diagnosis" by C.
