The Great Spirit called a meeting of all the tribes and asked that each send a representative. The council was held on the great prairie in winter so everyone was asked to carry a small bundle of wood for the fire. As they arrived the Cherokee did not want his wood to warm the Creek, nor the Lakota for the Crow, and the Navajo and the Hopi. Even though they were brothers, they had been traditional enemies. All drifted off to sleep unwilling to replenish the fire and perished. It was not from the cold outside but from the cold within.
